Heard of the Saggar Maker's Bottom Knocker? If you've ever wondered what that person did for a living, have a look at this – we have a Saggar in our J C Edwards Exhibition! The Saggar was a ceramic box for stacking tiles to allow an even distribution of heat in the kiln. The Bottom Knocker must have put the holes in – these were for testing sample pieces of clay for colouring and shrinkage.
