Our Object this week is a souvenir booklet from the Jubilee celebrations in 1927 (postponed from 1926) at Rhosymedre Methodist Church. It also includes adverts from local firms such as W H Morris.
Object of the Week, 12 November
Our Object this week is a photo of the Cefn Mawr Operatic Society, at a time when it regularly performed works by Gilbert and Sullivan in the George Edwards Hall. This is the whole-cast line-is of ‘HMS Pinafore’.
Object of the Week, 5 November
Our Object of the Week fits with the theme of Remembrance as we approach the centenary of the end of World War 1. It is a military helmet from that period, of the kind worn by millions of soldiers at the Front. It is part of the Museum’s special centenary exhibition.
Object of the Week, 29 October
Our Objects this week are a selection of sports trophies from individuals and groups in the area.
Object of the Week, 22 October
Our Object of the Week is a recently donated drawing office cabinet, which will soon be holding some of our more fragile documents and papers.
Object of the Week, 15 October
Our Object of the Week is a recently donated volume from 1876, entitled ‘Sunday at Home’, intended as suitable reading for the Sabbath! It’s a bound volume of a series of magazines that can be found in our Churches and Chapels section.
Object of the Week, 8 October
Our Object of the Week comes from our special exhibition about the First World War. It includes this selection of military medals won during the war.
Special Exhibition
Our latest special exhibition commemorates the centenary of the ending of the First World War. It consists of items from our regular military collection, plus loans from local people interested in this subject — in particular at the moment, Jim Henshaw. Please come in and see it. It will run at least until the end of November.
Next Society Meeting
Our next meeting will be held in the George Edwards Hall on Friday 26 October at 7pm, when Lowri Jones will speak on 'Dotty May — 2nd World War Munitions Worker'. Admission is free to Members and £2 to non-members and guests on the door. Refreshments will be available, and a Grand Raffle will be drawn on the evening. We have now created a new Facebook page dedicated to the Cefn Mawr Historical Society. Please visit it to find the latest news of the Society's programme and activities.
Cefn Mawr Historical Society Meeting
Advance notice of a change of plan for our September meeting. Our advertised speaker for Friday 28 September, Keith Walker, has generously agreed to postpone his talk in favour of an evening devoted to the publication of a book called ‘Percy — A Story of 1918’. It’s about a young Cefn lad, Percy Edwards, who gets called up in the final months of World War 1, and sadly is killed on 28 September 1918. A century to the day after his death, the author of the book, Peter Doyle, and the book’s illustrator, Tim Godden are coming to Cefn Mawr, where they will speak to schoolchildren during the day, and then address the Historical Society at the evening meeting in the George Edwards Hall. This is a very special occasion, which we hope many people will take the opportunity of attending. Copies of the book, designed to be read and enjoyed by adults and youngsters, should be available for sale on the night. Do make a point of being present at this unique event.
