Object of the Week

Our Object this week will resound with a whole generation of music lovers! The Dansette record player, a recent donation, was the instrument of musical liberty for teenagers in the fifties and sixties. No longer did they have to listen to their favourite records on the family radiogram – they could play them on their Dansette in the privacy of their bedroom!

Object of the Week

Our Object this week is a Photometer – this dates back to the days when cameras did not have built-in light meters of their own, and would have required skilled usage to get the best photographic print. You can see this Object in a new display, focussed on photography, which you'll find in the Music and Art Room.

Object of the Week

Our Object of the Week, a glass bottle (or is it a vase?), was dug up by workmen in the grounds at the back of the George Edwards Hall while preparing the ground for the iron arch from Plaskynaston Foundry. The top is missing, and we don't know what the object's purpose was, so any ideas are welcome!

Object of the Week

Our Object of the Week is outside the Museum! This week, an iron arch from the original Plaskynaston Foundry – the source of iron for the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct – was placed in the grounds at the back of the George Edwards Hall in Cefn Mawr. It was originally displayed on the Monsanto site, and is a direct link with all that work done 200 years ago, which is now recognised as a World Heritage Site. Come and have a look!

Society Meeting in July

Just to let you know that the advertised topic for the July meeting of the Historical Society has had to be changed at short notice. The theme for the evening is now 'Travel Back in Time: Howard Paddock and Dewi Davies on local journeys by train and coach'. We'll be making some use of DVDs to illustrate the topic. We'll also be holding a short Extraordinary General Meeting to elect a new Chair and Secretary, and to fill vacant Committee positions. The meeting is in the George Edwards Hall at 7pm on Friday 28 July.
