Heard of the Saggar Maker's Bottom Knocker? If you've ever wondered what that person did for a living, have a look at this – we have a Saggar in our J C Edwards Exhibition! The Saggar was a ceramic box for stacking tiles to allow an even distribution of heat in the kiln. The Bottom Knocker must have put the holes in – these were for testing sample pieces of clay for colouring and shrinkage.
Object of the Week
Our Object this week is not actually in the Museum! It's an ornament in a local garden, but we are using this picture of it in our J C Edwards Exhibition. Viewed from this angle, we are looking at it from underneath, as it is displayed vertically – but originally the gargoyle figure would have been horizontal and peered out at you! Thanks to Aileen and Martin Richards for allowing us to photograph it. This is just one of many artistic figures produced by the J C Edwards firm.
Object of the Week
Recently acquired, our Object of the Week is a bill, dated 1896, from Cefn Stone Quarries to a customer in Birkdale, Southport, for a consignment of stone blocks (a railway wagon's worth). It takes us back to the days when stone quarrying was an everyday part of life in Cefn and Rhosymedre.
Object of the Week
Like any Museum we have acquired our share of old bottles, and our Objects this week are a small selection from our collection.
Object of the Week
Our Object this week is an acetylene lamp, the sort that night watchmen might have used during their spells of duty.
Object of the Week
Our Object of the Week, recently loaned, is a Singer Sewing Machine with a treadle table, the sort of machine which must have been responsible for much of the nation's sewing for many decades.
Object of the Week
Our Object of the Week comes from our latest special exhibition. Given the interest shown in the J C Edwards Exhibition last year, we have decided to present it in an expanded and updated version for the beginning of 2018. The Object, not surprisingly, is a J C Edwards brick, easily recognised by its initials! Our exhibition will probably run until the end of March 2018.
Object of the Week
Our first Object of the Week for 2018 is actually a newly-created display of mining objects and documents, illustrating the story of mining in our area. We look forward to seeing you again soon!
Object of the Week
Our Object this week comes from our small collection of older original Christmas cards. It comes with our very best wishes to you all for a happy Christmas and peaceful New Year. We close for the Christmas holiday on Wednesday 20 December and reopen on Wednesday 3 January 2018.
Cefn Christmas Fair
Here we are at the recent Cefn Christmas Fair in the George Edwards Hall — packed with people!
